May

The European Union introduces General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) the most sweeping data protection law changes in the world .

June

HealthEngine app is reported to have funnelled hundreds of users' private medical information to law firms seeking clients for personal injury claims. And subsequently HealthEngine reveals data breach in which 59,600 pieces of patient feedback “may have been improperly accessed”.

Commonwealth Bank customers’ medical data exposed in potential privacy breach.

May

Australian business, Canva - an online graphic design tool - suffered a data breach that impacted 137 million users. The exposed data included email addresses, names, usernames, cities and passwords stored as bcrypt hashes.

Speraco Bureau collaborates with health care agency, formalising consultation proposal for introducing data governance of indigenous health datasets as part of Reconciliation Action Plan, for promoting indigenous control of indigenous data based on CARE Principles issued by Global Indigenous Data Alliance.
